How Long Does a Local Move Really Take?

People often assume a local move will be done in a few hours. Sometimes that is true. But many times, a local move takes much longer than expected. Understanding what affects the time helps you plan your day properly and avoid unnecessary stress.

What Counts as a Local Move?

A local move generally means moving within the same city or within 50 to 100 kilometres. The distance is short, but that does not mean the process is quick. Loading, travelling, and unloading all take time regardless of how far the destination is.

Factors That Affect How Long Your Move Takes

The Size of Your Home

This is the single biggest factor. A studio apartment or a 1 BHK will take far less time than a 3 BHK family home. More rooms mean more boxes, more furniture, and more trips in and out of the building. As a rough guide:

  • Studio or 1 BHK: 2 to 4 hours
  • 2 BHK: 4 to 6 hours
  • 3 BHK: 6 to 9 hours
  • 4 BHK or larger: a full day or more

These are estimates with a well-prepared home and an experienced team. Add time if things are not pre-packed or if the building has access challenges.

How Many Movers Are on the Team

Two movers will take significantly longer than four. A larger crew costs more per hour, but they work in parallel. Furniture is carried by more hands. Boxes are staged faster. For a 3 BHK home, four movers will often finish in less time than two movers and cost you the same total, because the job finishes sooner.

The Amount of Heavy Furniture

A wardrobe, a double bed, a dining table, a large sofa — these items take careful handling. They often need to be disassembled, carried by multiple people, and reassembled at the destination. Each heavy piece adds meaningful time to the day. If you have several large furniture items, factor in at least 20 to 30 extra minutes per piece.

Access at Both Locations

Where the truck can park matters a great deal. If the truck can stop right outside the front door, loading is fast. If the truck has to park 50 metres away and movers must carry everything across a road or through a gate, every trip takes longer.

Stairs slow things down significantly. Movers carrying a heavy wardrobe up three flights of stairs need time and rest between trips. A building with no service elevator and multiple floors adds considerable time to any move.

Traffic and Distance Within the City

Even within one city, the drive between your old home and your new one can add time. Moving at 9 AM on a weekday in a busy city is very different from moving at 11 AM on a Sunday. If your route passes through congested areas during peak hours, factor in an extra 30 to 90 minutes for the journey alone.

How Well-Prepared You Are on Moving Day

This is the factor most people underestimate. If every box is packed, sealed, and labelled before the movers arrive, the day moves quickly. If movers arrive to find items still loose on shelves, clothes not in bags, or boxes half-packed, they lose time waiting or helping with tasks they were not hired to do.

Pack everything the night before. Have all boxes in one place, ideally near the front door. Disassemble large furniture before the movers arrive. This alone can shave one to two hours off your move.

How to Speed Up Your Moving Day

  • Pack and seal all boxes the day before the move.
  • Disassemble beds, wardrobes, and large tables in advance.
  • Label every box with its destination room.
  • Clear pathways through your home so movers can walk freely.
  • Arrange parking at both locations before moving day.
  • Book the service elevator in advance if your building has one.

Start Early in the Morning

Whenever possible, schedule your move to begin at 8 AM or 9 AM. Starting early gives you a long runway. If something takes longer than expected, you still have the whole day ahead. A move that starts at noon and runs into evening traffic is far more stressful than one that starts at dawn and wraps up comfortably before dinner.
