A home office is full of small electronics. Printers, routers, hard drives, and gadgets all need care when you move. These items are delicate and often costly. Here is how to pack them safely.
Back Up Your Data First
Before you pack any device that stores data, make a backup.
Save your files to a cloud service or an external drive. This protects your work in case a device is damaged during the move.
Prepare Your Printer
Printers need a little prep before packing. Skipping these steps can cause leaks and damage.
- Remove the ink or toner cartridges
- Place cartridges in a sealed bag to prevent leaks
- Remove any paper from the tray
- Tape down or secure any moving parts and lids
Ink can leak during transport and ruin the inside of the printer. Removing the cartridges first is the safest choice.
Photograph Your Cable Setup
Small electronics often have many cables. It is easy to forget how they connect.
Take a photo of the back of each device before you unplug anything. This makes it simple to set everything up again at the new home.
Manage the Cables
Loose cables get tangled and lost. Keep them tidy.
Unplug each cable and roll it up neatly. Tie it with a twist tie or a rubber band. Label each cable with the device it belongs to.
Put all the cables for one device in a bag, and pack them in the same box as that device.
Wrap Each Device
Every small electronic item should be wrapped for the journey.
Use the original box if you have it. If not, wrap the device in bubble wrap and place it in a snug box. Fill empty space with soft material so the device does not move around.
Pack Routers and Small Gadgets
Routers, modems, and small gadgets are light but delicate.
Wrap each one in bubble wrap. You can pack a few small items together in one box, as long as each is wrapped and does not touch the others directly.
Keep the passwords and setup details for your router in a safe place so you can reconnect easily.
Label the Boxes
Mark every box with "FRAGILE" and "ELECTRONICS." Note which way is up.
This tells the movers to handle these boxes gently and keep them from being crushed under heavier items.
Keep Valuable Data Devices With You
Small items like hard drives and USB drives hold important data. Carry these with you rather than in the truck.
This keeps your most important files safe and within reach during the move.
