How to Protect Wooden Furniture During a Move

Wooden furniture is often the most valuable and loved part of a home. A dining table, a wardrobe, or a bed frame can last for years. But wood scratches, dents, and can even swell if it gets wet. Here is how to protect your wooden furniture during a move.

Clean Before You Pack

Always start with a clean surface. Dust and dirt can scratch the wood when you wrap it.

Wipe down each piece with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use a wet cloth right before the move, as leftover moisture can cause damage during transport.

Take Furniture Apart When You Can

Large wooden furniture is easier and safer to move in parts.

Remove table legs, take apart bed frames, and detach shelves where possible. Smaller pieces are less likely to break and take up less space in the truck.

Keep all screws and small fittings in a zip-lock bag. Tape the bag to the furniture piece it belongs to, so nothing gets lost.

Protect Corners and Edges

Corners and edges take the most damage during a move. They knock against walls, doors, and other items.

Use cardboard corner protectors or folded cardboard to cover these areas. This simple step prevents most dents and chips.

Wrap Each Piece Properly

Wrapping is the most important step for wooden furniture.

  • First, cover the piece with a soft moving blanket or thick cloth
  • Then wrap it with stretch film to hold the blanket in place
  • Do not put plastic wrap directly on wood, as trapped moisture can damage the finish

The cloth layer protects the surface. The plastic layer keeps out dust and water.

Guard Against Moisture

Moisture is the biggest enemy of wooden furniture. Wet wood can swell, warp, or grow mould.

This matters most during the monsoon or in humid weather. Make sure your furniture is fully covered before it leaves the house. Ask your movers if their truck is sealed against rain.

Load Wooden Furniture Correctly

How furniture is placed in the truck matters a lot.

Heavy wooden pieces should stand upright and be secured with straps. Do not stack heavy items on top of wooden surfaces, as this can leave marks or cracks.

Leave a small gap between wooden furniture and other hard items to avoid rubbing during the drive.

Care After Arrival

When you reach the new home, unwrap your furniture soon. Wood needs air, and leaving it wrapped for days can trap moisture.

Check each piece for any damage. Reassemble furniture carefully using the screws you saved. Then wipe everything down and place it in its new spot.
