Electronics are some of the most expensive items you own. They are also among the most delicate. Packing them the wrong way during a move can cause damage that is not easy or cheap to fix.
Why Electronics Need Special Care
Electronics contain sensitive components that can be damaged by shocks, vibrations, heat, and moisture.
A cracked TV screen or a water-damaged laptop can cost more to repair than the cost of the move itself. Taking a little extra time to pack them correctly is worth it.
Use Original Boxes Whenever Possible
The best box for any electronic item is the one it came in. The original packaging is designed to hold the item securely and absorb impact during transport.
If you still have the original boxes for your TV, laptop, or microwave, use them. Keep the foam inserts too â they hold the item in place and prevent it from shifting.
What to Do If You Do Not Have the Original Box
Find a box that is slightly larger than the item. Wrap the item in bubble wrap or anti-static foam before placing it in the box.
Fill any empty space in the box with packing paper or foam peanuts. The item should not move when you shake the box gently.
Do not use newspapers directly against electronic screens or surfaces. The ink can transfer and be difficult to remove.
Packing Your TV
Use the original box if you have it. If not, a TV-specific moving box works well. These boxes have adjustable foam corners to hold the screen in place.
Always transport a TV upright. Never lay it flat â the screen can crack under pressure if it is placed face-down or stacked beneath heavy items.
Mark the box "FRAGILE â SCREEN INSIDE â DO NOT LAY FLAT."
Packing Laptops and Small Devices
Wrap each device individually in bubble wrap. Place them in a padded bag or a small box with extra foam.
Keep laptops, tablets, and phones in your personal bag during the move if possible. Do not pack them in the truck with the rest of your goods.
This also means you have easy access to your devices when you arrive at the new home.
Cables and Accessories
Label each cable before you disconnect it. A simple tag or a piece of masking tape with the device name will help you reconnect everything easily later.
Use zip ties or rubber bands to keep cables together. Pack all accessories for a device in the same box as the device itself.
Extra Tips for Safe Electronics Packing
- Take photos of your cable setup before disconnecting anything
- Remove batteries from remotes and small devices to prevent leaks
- Do not pack electronics in extremely cold or hot conditions
- Mark all electronics boxes as "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP"
- Anti-static bubble wrap is better than regular bubble wrap for sensitive circuit boards
