Packing clothes for a move sounds simple, but if you do it wrong, you could end up with a pile of wrinkled outfits that need washing or ironing before you can wear them. Here is how to do it right.
Use Wardrobe Boxes for Hanging Clothes
A wardrobe box is a tall, sturdy box with a metal rod across the top. You simply transfer your hanging clothes directly from the wardrobe to the box without folding them.
This is the best option for formal wear, sarees, suits, and anything that creases easily. The clothes travel upright and arrive in the same condition as they left.
Ask your moving company if wardrobe boxes are available. Many professional movers carry them as part of their packing service.
How to Fold and Pack Flat Clothes
For everyday clothes â t-shirts, jeans, casual wear â folding works well.
Fold clothes tightly and roll them to reduce wrinkles and save space in the box. This method works especially well for t-shirts and casual trousers.
Place heavier items like jeans at the bottom of the box and lighter items like t-shirts on top.
Packing Delicate Fabrics
For delicate items like silk, chiffon, or embroidered clothing, wrap each piece in tissue paper before packing. This protects the fabric from friction and keeps it clean.
Do not pack delicate clothes near heavy or sharp items. Give them their own box with soft padding on all sides.
Packing Shoes
Use the original shoe boxes if you have them. If not, wrap each pair in packing paper and place them in a box together.
Stuff the inside of each shoe with paper to help them keep their shape during transport.
Pack shoes with shoes â do not mix them in boxes with clothing.
Packing Accessories
Jewellery, belts, scarves, and smaller accessories can go in a small zip-lock bag or a compartmentalised case. Keep these with your personal bag rather than in the moving truck if they are valuable.
For belts, roll them up and tuck them inside shoes or along the edges of a box to use space efficiently.
Keeping Clothes Clean During Transport
Even if clothes are packed correctly, a dusty or damp truck can leave them smelling musty.
Seal each box properly with packing tape. For your most important clothes, use vacuum-seal bags for extra protection against dust and moisture.
Place a small lavender sachet or a dryer sheet in the box to keep clothes fresh during the move.
