A move is the perfect chance to clear out what you no longer need. Moving fewer items saves money on packing materials, truck space, and labor. More importantly, it means you start fresh in your new home without bringing old clutter with you.
Start Early â Do Not Leave This for Moving Week
The biggest mistake people make is waiting until the last few days to decide what to remove. By then, there is no time to donate, sell, or dispose of anything properly.
Start going through your belongings four to six weeks before moving day. Give yourself enough time to make thoughtful decisions and arrange for items to be collected, sold, or donated.
Sort Into Four Groups
As you go through each room, sort items into four groups:
- Keep: Items you use regularly and need in the new home
- Donate: Items in good condition that someone else could use
- Sell: Items with value that you no longer need
- Discard: Items that are broken, worn out, or not suitable for donation
Work through one room at a time. Do not move to the next room until the current one is fully sorted.
Donating Before You Move
Many organisations in India accept clothing, furniture, household items, and books. Check for local NGOs, old-age homes, schools, or community centres that accept donations in your area.
Some organisations will pick up larger items from your home, which saves you the effort of transporting them.
Donating is especially useful for clothing, kitchen items, books, and furniture that is still in good condition but no longer fits your needs or your new space.
Selling Before You Move
Online platforms make it easy to sell second-hand items. List furniture, electronics, and appliances a few weeks before moving day.
Arrange for buyers to collect items from your home, ideally before packing begins. This reduces clutter during packing and puts money back in your pocket.
Be realistic about pricing. A slightly lower price means a faster sale, which is more useful than waiting for a higher offer as the moving date approaches.
Recycling and Responsible Disposal
Some items cannot be donated or sold â broken electronics, old mattresses, paint cans, or expired cleaning products.
Look for local recycling centres or municipal waste collection services for these items. Electronics like old phones, laptops, and appliances can be handed to certified e-waste recyclers in most Indian cities.
What Not to Move
In general, avoid moving:
- Items you have not used in more than a year
- Duplicate items you do not need two of
- Items that do not fit the layout of the new home
- Old newspapers, magazines, or paper with no lasting value
- Food items that will expire before you settle in
